Krankensaal Nr. 6 (2022)

Krankensaal Nr. 6 is a theatrical investigation of institutional power, structured around Anton Chekhov’s short story and its critique of psychiatric systems. The work examines how mechanisms of care become mechanisms of control, and how rational structures meant to heal can instead produce harm.

At the center is Andrej Jefymitsch Ragin (Sascha Tuxhorn), a once idealistic doctor who confronts the devastating reality that the asylum he serves damages its patients more than it treats them. Through philosophical encounters with Ivan Dmitritsch, Ragin’s own sense of reason begins to fracture, ultimately leading to his confinement and collapse within the very system he upholds.

The production draws on Michel Foucault’s thinking on madness, power, and institutional memory, staging the asylum as a closed system that absorbs and neutralizes dissent. In the final moments before death, Foucault appears as both narrator and dream figure, guiding the audience through the fragmented remains of Ragin’s inner world.
